"Becoming an indispensable leader is not just about dealing with people you like, but with those that cause you burdens and difficulty."
While visiting Southeast Asia, I discovered a fruit called durian and ate it despite its foul smelling odor. Oddly enough, I found myself craving durian and not caring about the repulsive stench it released when it was peeled. Now, whenever I make a trip to Southeast Asia, I often check the stores to see if they have any fresh durian for sale.
There are some fruits that are easy to enjoy but not truly craved. On the contrary, although initially difficult to grow accustomed to, durian is unforgettable once its taste is acquired. Such a phenomenon can also apply to people. Looking back on the many people I’ve met, those who ultimately broadened my horizons and benefited me in different ways were often those who were initially hard to accept.
Likewise, I think our prospective Good News Corp volunteers must expand the boundaries of their hearts in order to lead this world. Becoming an indispensable leader is not just about dealing with people you like, but also with those who cause you burden and difficulty. Much like enjoying durian, taking the time to savor a unique flavor or taste we have never experienced before is the key to appreciating the variety that makes life all the more rich and rewarding. This understanding will allow you access to the hearts of others one by one, and it opens the path for you to become precious workers of tomorrow who are capable of caring for others with a heart of self-sacrifice.
